Humane Society of Taos
Stray Hearts Animal Shelter
Our Mission
Stray Hearts is a socially conscious shelter and adoption facility reuniting lost pets with their families and providing humane care and shelter for surrendered, lost, and homeless companion animals in Taos County, New Mexico.
Our animals are special—we treat them with respect, care, and love to prepare them for their forever families.
We make every effort to reunite lost pets with their families.
We work with animals to assess their personality and challenges as well as encourage good behavior and habits.
We ensure that all animals from Stray Hearts will be spayed/neutered, microchipped, dewormed, and fully vaccinated for their age.
Socially Conscious Animal Community
Stray Hearts Animal Shelter, d/b/a The Humane Society of Taos is proud to join the Socially Conscious Sheltering movement and has adopted its core principles as its own organizational values.
The time has come for animal welfare professionals and the communities who support them to look beyond “no-kill” for the future of our industry. The Socially Conscious Animal Community concept is based on respectful treatment of animals, placing every healthy and safe animal, transparency and leadership, thoughtful public policy, and safe communities.
The cornerstone for Socially Conscious Animal Communities is Socially Conscious Sheltering: a compassionate, transparent, and thoughtful model outlining how animal shelters and rescues can best support vulnerable animals in their care and in their community.
